Hints and Tips

On this page I want to share a few short and simple hints and tips relating to the Swifty Zero or Swifty Air kick scooters and kick scooting in general. If you have any you might want to add, please use the Contact form above.

  • Bare ankles – be careful, the rear wheel hub bolts tend to catch the ankles.
  • Bicycles – after you ride a Swifty scooter, you may never use them again.
  • Buy lights – good quality, high power LED lights make all the difference.
  • Canal paths – always flat but can be busy with dog walkers, runners and cyclists.
  • Centre of gravity – keep everything low down on the scooter for better balance.
  • Charging lights – always charge after use and be ready for the next scoot.
  • Clothing – multiple thin layers are more versatile than fewer thick ones.
  • Fit mudguards – easiest way to keep the dirt from your clothing.
  • Footwear – a sole with a good grip is essential in wet weather.
  • Gloves – good for grip, protection in falls and warmer hands.
  • Gravel – watch out when changing direction or encounters at speed.
  • Handlebar grips – Ergon GP1 grips are really, really comfortable.
  • Jingly bells – much easier to alert people to your presence, mostly.
  • Load carrying – it’s easier to carry stuff on the scooter than on your back.
  • Luggage – make sure the lid is securly closed as things tend to bounce out.
  • More lights – having two lights is much better than just having one.
  • Mudguards – good for Swifty Zero, not so good for off-road Swifty Air.
  • Pavements – give way to pedestrians unless they indicate otherwise.
  • Rear lights – attach to yourself, bag, pack or belt, to be seen from the rear.
  • Road kerbs – careful here, they may scratch the underside of the scooter.
  • Tarmac roads – tend to be rougher, pavement are generally smoother.
  • Railway paths – always a gentle gradient but climbs can be long.
  • Rim tapes – good quality essential to help prevent punctures.
  • Shorts – surf/beach/swim or board shorts are great for kick scooting.
  • Storage – buy or build a proper stand to support your Swifty scooter.
  • Swap legs – change legs often when kicking for a balanced workout.
  • Swifty Air – the ideal scooter for off-road adventures and downhill use.
  • Swifty One – good for commuting, transporting and easy to store.
  • Swifty Zero – the ideal scooter for fast commuting and general fitness.
  • Tools – always carry a few basic tools and spares, including inner tubes.
  • Tyre choice – big tyres for off-road trails, skinny tyres for roads and paths.
  • Tyre pressures – high for road speed, low for off-road comfort and grip.
  • Tyre sealant – put some in the inner tubes and help avoid punctures.
  • Wet leaves – always a hazard to look out for. Avoid on bends at speed.
  • Wheel bearings – avoid direct pressure washing. They really don’t like it.
  • Wheel removal – easier if you disconnect brakes and deflate the tyre.
