Turf Zone – Beaufort12

Right, the golden rule for Turf missions, and the Edinburgh Roon in particular is, wait for it, do not take any zones that will result in you blocking yourself later in the day. Yes, that was what happened to me or rather I did to myself. To navigate you, of course, need your turf man on and there’s the risk. In my case, I was crossing a bridge over the Water of Leith and had to get off and walk the bike due to heavy pedestrian traffic. The delay resulted in the zone being taken. Not a problem at the time.

Then, later on, I’m zooming back down to the Water of Leith to take zone No 17 BridgeOnLeith, the very one I’d taken earlier. Insert sweary words here. So, I had a dilemma. Do I pack it in and return another day? Do I hang about and hope another turfer will appear and take the zone? Or come up with something else? I decided to come up with something else.

As I could not continue without taking the zone and with no other turfer within calling distance for help, I needed a means of taking the zone. What I needed was another turfer. So, I decided to create a temporary one and I called him SkinnySawMan. So, here’s what you need to do if you find yourself in the same situation:

  1. uninstall the Turf app from your mobile phone.
  2. re-install the Turf app onto your phone.
  3. sign in with a different turf name from your own.
  4. follow any instructions and take the zone.
  5. again, uninstall the Turf app from your mobile phone.
  6. and re-install the Turf app onto your phone.
  7. login with your usual turf name and continue.

Thus, I was able to continue with the mission. Managed to increase my 6 zone takes from yesterday to a pleasing 20 takes, leaving only (only!) another 120 remaining. Thought I might even be in with a chance of catching Cruachan but he must have seen me on my mission and added a few more to increase his lead.

Now, a small hint and tip I’ve gleamed from today turf mission. The first is make doubly sure that you actually take the zone before continuing to the next zone, which will likely be some distance away and also check the Turf Mission log to see that you are progressing. This may not be instant and can take a few minutes. Worth a spending a few moments to avoid disappointment later.

Now, what are my impressions of the Edinburgh Roon so far? Well, I must say after a shaky start when I missed the first zone, I’m finding it very enjoyable. The way the zones have been selected to make you travel all across the centre of Edinburgh seems to work well. Even the odd curse when you find the next zone means you have to drop back down to the low ground you’ve just spent 15 minutes climbing out off, just add to the game. Yet there are also a few relatively easy zones where the distance between is not so great. So, a big thumbs up to Fearglas whom I assume was responsible for selecting the zones. Back soon.
