Turf Zone – Bannockrigg

Task No. 15 – 15th December – Turf Criteria

Easy Option
Select any two of the criteria below, then take 5 zones for each. For example, take five zones each with an animal, bird, etc, in the zone name. Zones can only be used once.

Challenging Option
In addition to, and as described in Easy, take 5 zones for the two remaining listed criteria. 20 different zones in total.

Four vowels in the zone name.
A points value of 185/+1 points.
A 13-character zone name.
An animal, bird, etc, in the zone name.

All seemed very straight forwards this one though a trip to visit relatives in Selkirk meant this would be an after-dark evening session. So, first job was to select 16 suitable zones and I was lucky enough to find all 16 locally to home. And this was quite by chance, I might add, as I never plan these tasks with myself in mind. Why? because that would not be fair to other participants and to myself as I also want to take part.

Four vowels in the zone name.
Pittendriech, WayOfBaird, SignsOfHumans and WaverleyPark.

A points value of 185/+1 points.
GeorgeWarMem, Bannockrigg, IKnowBroom and XRaySpex.

A 13-character zone name.
TongueSpatula, ChestersGlare, PeacocksBeard and BurnbraePoint.

An animal, bird, etc, in the zone name.
RobinAndTuck. ChesterGarden. GroovyFarm and BikeSlooowly.

The evening session turned out, as predicted, easy enough, though a chance meeting with turfer MuttsCycles threw me off kilter and I mixed up my take order, missing zone Pittendreich but was able to take that later. Good job I sat down and checked I’d actually taken everything before stopping for the night. One tip I realised might be useful during this session was to also have backup zones to take should you find yourself blocked.

Just want to mention the animals found in the zone names. The robin was pretty obvious and I was pleased to spot the owl on BikeSlooowly. In Chestergarden, a Gar is actually a fish and the “roo” in GroovyFarm is Australian slang for kangaroo. It also means an idiot, fool or clumsy person but I’m sure you all know that. And that was that.

Or was it?  Well, no actually. I was lying in bed later that night and suddenly I thought 16 zones? Where the heck did that figure come from? I was sure I’d stipulated a total of 20 zones in the task.  Which, of course, I had. See above. However, all was not lost. It was easy enough to add another 4 zones to the list, albeit with some juggling of zones to fulfil the task requirements. Namely, zone PeacocksBeard was used for the animal criteria. Will take them during the next task tomorrow.
