It was the big city for me today, Auld Reekie, off into Edinburgh to track down a few unique zones that have appeared since my last visit, and also to grab a few turfer uniques. My steed for today was Mr Orange, my new Brompton, a C line model with no less than 6 gears in a strange combination of 3-speed hub gear and two-sprocket cassette. 3 x 2 = 6. Mr Orange is so named after the character in the Quentin Tarantino movie Reservoir Dogs, should you be wondering.
Weather was great for the end of December, double figure temperature’s, next to no wind and even some sunshine to warm the cockles. My starting point was Gladstone Place, off Leith Links, always an easy place to park and handy for turfing this side of Edinburgh. Even the city centre isn’t all that far away, just an easy ride up the dedicated cycleways along Leith Walk. Well, they are supposed to be for cyclists but no-one seems to pay much attention and the wee bell gets well used for pedestrians and also the cyclists riding the wrong way along the cycle path. Mind you, not sure I would class Just Eat delivery people as cyclists.
I must say that I love cycling in Edinburgh on Mr Orange rather than my other bikes. The compact size of the Brompton seems to make everything so much simpler and easier. You seem to effortlessly glide along the cycle paths, streets and lanes. And the pavements as well. It appears that riding a Brompton brings out the naughty in you. I found myself riding along pavements without a care in the world (well, within reason), much like I would do on the kick scooter. Yet I would not dream of doing the same on a full-size bike. Very strange indeed. I hate the cobbles mind you.
One thing that always amazes me with a turf session is the number of takes you end up with. You set out for a small handful of unique zones and a couple of turfer uniques but come home with 45 takes and 8000 points. Not that I’m complaining, mind you, always handy to keep a decent gap between yourself and the those poor souls in the League relegation zone. I’ve got 56,000 at the moment but with still another 10 days until the next Round, the more the better.
Oh, to finish, must tell you about my new Gorewear jacket. Bought it in the sale a few weeks ago and having tested it out a few times now can highly recommend it for turfing on the bike. It’s not waterproof as such but the front of the jacket has a thicker windproof layer and a lighter breathable layer on the back. Great for cycling in cooler conditions and when its blowing a hoolie. I never rated Gorewear very highly before but it really does what it says on the tin. Back soon.
