One of the great things about the turf community is how amazing it is that so many turfers are happy to share their turf wisdom and knowledge of turf related events with other turfers. Sally, aka turfer Wintergreen, dropped me a message about an event happening in Edinburgh, the World Orienteering Championships, and as being a turfer and an orienteer seem to go hand in hand, there is a high possibility of turf tourists visiting the city. As a keen collector of turfer uniques, I am more than just a little excited at the prospect. Yes, I know it’s daft, no medals or whatever, but there you go. The event runs from the 12th to 16th July. Details on the above link.
Bus trips into Edinburgh on Friday and Saturday bagged me a good 10 different turfer uniques, including Baggisman, otyr, Pinepod, Bernie27, TurfanatorSROC, MiriamSROC, DavidRSROC, AJHB, havering and ZwiftTurfer. Big thanks to Sally for the heads up on the event. The Map of Untaken Turfers on Warded shows another 9 have appeared since I returned home today. However, the big problem again is they are all well spread across the city with some at Portobello in the east and others all the way across the city in the Colinton area.
Both previous trips have been by public transport, namely the bus, and I feel like I’ve spent hours sitting on a noisy bus rumbling along busy streets. It can be quite tedious and tiring. The other option to busing would be to cycle but this latest batch would require cycling in the region of 30 to 35 miles all in. Mind you weather looks good tomorrow so perhaps something to consider. Will take a decision tomorrow morning. I tend to restrict myself to only the turfer unique target zones I want and don’t take too many of the normal zones I encounter. Saves some effort and time.
Now, the mobile phone. I’ve been finding that the screen seems to switch itself on at random, even after I’d switched it off with the side button. I find this rather annoying when turfing at night on the bike or kick scooter, the glare from the screen can be very distracting, particularly in the darker places away from street lighting. However, managed to disable a setting relating to the lock screen that stopped all this, so much better now. I now switch the screen on only with the side button. Helps save battery power as well. More soon.
