Turf Zone – DobbysSock

You know, when I’m out turfing with the Harley Quinn single speed bike, I always think this is great, the best ride ever and tell myself I should ride this bike more often. Then I take out the Surly Pugsley fat bike, and I love the comfort of the big fat tyres, and I tell myself I should ride this bike more often. Then, like this morning, I take the Swifty Air kick scooter out for a spin. Yes, you know what I’m going to say.

I guess I’m lucky having a choice of bikes and kick scooters to choose from and that I love to ride them all. Mind you, on the Swifty Air this morning, I was reminded of a speech John Kennedy said of the space race on 12 September 1962. “We choose to go turfing on a kick scooter, not because it is easy, but because it is hard.” Well, something like that, anyway. I was only 10-months old at the time.

Today, I’m going to talk about why an up-to-date good quality mobile phone is worth having. Recently, I became the proud owner of a Google Pixel 8 Pro mobile phone. Actually, it was a present from my wife Cathryn, a.k.a. ChoccyMuffin, for my birthday, which is tomorrow. Or today if you are reading this on the 12th November. Or “the other day” if you are reading this after the 12th November. The phone came with a Google Pixel Watch 2 which became Cathryn’s birthday present.

First topic I want to look at is, yes, you’ve guessed correctly, turfing. The Google Pixel 8 Pro has a number of advantages over my old Samsung Galaxy A10. Firstly, the screen is brighter, clearer and sharper and the screen refresh seems much faster as well. The battery also seems to last longer and the IP68 dust and water resistance rating means no more worries about keeping the phone dry when turfing in the rain. The specification includes a whole host of techno-wizardry that Wallace and Gromit would be proud off, but I’m not going to delve into that here. Suffice to say all that makes the phone work better and that’s all that matters.

Now, it would be fair to say that the main reason I bought this phone is for its photographic abilities. The main features are the three cameras including, on the rear, a 50 MP wide main camera (25mm focal length), 48 MP ultrawide camera (11mm focal length) and 48 MP 5x telephoto camera (112mm focal length). On the front there’s a 10.5 MP selfie camera (20mm focal length). Oddly, Google refers to them as separate cameras rather than lenses.

So, why use a mobile phone as your main camera? There are a few good reasons:

  • you will always have your phone with you.
  • saves you carrying another camera and/or lenses.
  • it’s fairly inconspicuous for taking candid photos.
  • you can upload them instantly to social media.
  • You can take photographs of turf zones.
  • phones are much smaller than digital cameras.

Anyway, better get myself ready as we are heading out soon for a meal at Broomieknowe Golf Club to celebrate out joint birthdays. Hmm, home-made steak pie followed by apple crumble, here we come. Back soon.

Epilogue

I’ve just spent the last one hour and forty-five minutes watching Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City on Amazon Prime. I have no idea what it was about. My mind has been invaded by nothingness. It’s as if one hour and forty-five minutes of my life is now missing. It cost me £4.99. That’s £4.99 I won’t see again. We were going to watch Avatar: The Way of Water. I wish we had. Mind you, I would happily bet £4.99 it will become a cult classic in years to come. Looking forward to not watching Asteroid City 2.

The End.
